  • Bottom Line

The Evernote Mac app is the hub of Evernote activity for Apple users. With great search functionality and excellent tools for organizing and tagging notes, it's an indispensable productivity app.

Skim any list of the best Mac apps, and you're likely to find Evernote. This excellent tool and service lets you make notes of all kinds, sync them across all your devices, find them with ease, and, in short, get work done. The desktop apps give users an incredibly powerful and reliable hub. For Mac users, the Evernote Mac app is that central place to organize your notes and notebooks, search or annotate PDFs you've uploaded to Evernote, add tags, and otherwise make use of all your notes. Evernote has long been an Editors' Choice productivity app at PCMag, and for Apple users, the Evernote Mac app is the centerpiece of this wonderful service.

Free vs. Premium
Evernote is a freemium service, meaning all the apps are free to download, install, and use, though you'll hit some limitations if you're not a paying subscriber. Free account users can upload up to 60MB of data per month, though the cumulative amount of storage is unlimited. Note that unused uploads from one month do not roll over to the following month, however. The free account syncs your notes across all the Evernote apps you have installed, and it comes with some collaboration features, too.

Paying customers get a few extra features, as well as more upload bandwidth per month. Paid accounts are available in two tiers, Plus and Premium.

Evernote Plus costs $24.99 per year and increases your upload limit to 1GB per month. You'll want that additional bandwidth if you upload images or PDFs to your Evernote account. For example, I frequently upload and store photos of recipes in Evernote, which would be impossible with the 60MB limit. Another perk of the Plus membership is that you can save notebooks offline on Evernote's mobile apps, letting you can access and edit notes even when you don't have a cell data or a Wi-Fi signal. Plus members also get an option to add a passcode to their mobile apps, and they can forward emails into Evernote as well.

Premium, for $49.99 per year, is the highest tier of service. It includes 10GB of uploads per month, plus a few additional perks. In addition to everything the Plus account holders get, Premium users get to mark up PDFs stored in their Evernote account, scan and digitize business cards, view older versions of notes, and more.

Previously, Evernote offered just one Premium level account (there was no Plus version) for $45 per year, which came with 4GB of upload space per month. The new Plus/Premium model only turned up in 2015, so some users might still have the old Premium account with a lower fee and different set of options until their current annual contract expires. When that happens, they'll have to decide whether to upgrade to the new Premium, take the much-lower Plus option, or give up the perks altogether and return to a free account.

As a point of comparison, Microsoft OneNote offers 15GB of space (not per month, but total) for free account holders, and 1TB for Office 365 subscribers, although that space is shared among other Office Online apps.

There is one final Evernote option, and that's Evernote Business, which starts at $12 per user per month. See our review of Evernote Business for more details on this offering.

Features, Options, and Design
Evernote's Mac app is one of my primary tools for staying organized. The app gives me quick and simple access to all kinds of notes that I take, while also providing good tools for editing existing notes or making new ones.

Everything you create on Evernote can be sorted and tagged in a number of ways, and everything is searchable, including the text that appears in an image. It's all saved to the cloud, which explains how you can access all your files from a multitude of devices.

One of the things that often stops people from using Evernote is that they don't know how it can be useful, because the app is almost too open and flexible. It's a blank slate, and if you don't already have an idea for how to use it, you could easily feel stumped. It takes time to realize what you can do with it and more importantly, what you want to do with it. People who figure it out often get hooked, however.

One time I get file corruptions on upload PHP files with FireFTP.Bitvise SSH Client (formerly Tunnelier) not belongs to this category (or the category name is wrong), since it isn't a FTP Client. or to post comments. Best ftp app for mac 2015 laptop.

The more you use Evernote, the more apparent its features become. As you create and save notes to it—and notes can be typed or handwritten pages, audio memos, uploaded images, attached PDFs, and even content clipped from Web pages—you can arrange your notes into notebooks. Notebooks can be stacked, leaving you with, for example, a Recipes stack comprising a Baking notebook, a Cocktails notebook, and a Main Dishes notebook.

The Evernote Mac app uses either a three-panel display or a two-panel display, depending on how you customize it. To the far left are tools, shortcuts, and a list of recent notes. The next panel is a customizable view of your notes. You can view them as cards (pictures appear when notes contain them), in a list, or as snippets (showing a few lines of the note for context). In the two-panel setup, you can click any note to open it in its own window. In the three-panel display, the third panel is the chosen note, and you can edit it right there.

Shortcuts let you keep your most-important notebooks at the top of the stack on the left. A Work Chat tool is for those who use Evernote collaboratively. It's an instant messaging program that lets you talk to your teammates without ever leaving the context of your work environment.

Evernote's search capabilities are part of what make it such a useful and productive app. The app supports type-ahead search, as well as searching within images. If you snap a photo of a whiteboard with ideas written on it and upload that image to Evernote, all the text becomes searchable. That's huge. The Mac app also searches the titles of your notes and tags you've added.

Evernote Extras
The desktop app gives you space to finish up all those ideas you assembled (perhaps sloppily) on the go. Shifting between Evernote for Mac and one of its mobile apps, like Evernote for iPad, is key to getting the most from the service. If an idea strikes me while I'm away from my home or office, I quickly draft it in one of Evernote's mobile apps, not worrying too much about typos and disorganization. But back on a full-sized computer, with a comfortable keyboard, monitor, and a complete set of text-editing tools, I usually want to further develop what I started, clean up the formatting, and fill in missing ideas.

When you find Web content that you want to save, there's a convenient way to add it to Evernote without having to copy and paste anything. There's an Evernote Web Clipper plugin for Google Chrome, which lets you quickly snag the contents of any Web page and save it to Evernote. The Clipper gives you options of saving the entire Web page, the contents with images stripped out, or just a portion of the page that you highlight. Evernote lets you save everything, or at least as much as you deem necessary.

Finally, Evernote integrates with dozens of other apps and services. Compatibility is rarely a question.

Since the app first appeared in beta in 2008, it has grown tremendously. Over the years, as the tool's popularity has exploded, some power users have argued that the company has focused on rolling out new features and designs, but not necessarily supporting them well. Although the criticism isn't unwarranted, many of the specific complaints are about problems that are difficult to reproduce and verify in PCMag's testing environment. That said, you can read about other users' experiences on the Evernote user forum.

A Hub for Your Notes
Evernote remains an excellent productivity app, and it's a longstanding PCMag Editors' Choice. For Mac users, the Evernote Mac app is like home base, a place where you can return to ideas, polish up writing, organize notes and notebooks, annotate PDFs, and always find what you need. Paying subscribers get a lot more upload bandwidth per month than free account holders, and the top-tier Premium customers really get the best features, notably tools to edit and annotate PDFs and images. But you can still do a lot with the free version, and I highly recommend trying it out if you haven't gotten on board with this great app yet.
